Mirza Ghalib on 1857 Indian Rebellion

The 1857 Indian Rebellion was a turning point in Indian history. It marked the end of the Mughal Empire and the beginning of the British Raj. The rebellion was a response to the policies of the British East India Company, which had been ruling India since the 18th century. The company had been increasingly interfering in the affairs of the native rulers, and the rebels felt that their rights were being usurped. The rebellion began in Meerut, where Indian soldiers (sepoys) in the company’s army staged a mutiny. It then spread to other parts of the country, including Delhi, where the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah II, was deposed. The rebellion was eventually put down by the British, but it left a lasting impact on the course of Indian history.
